For several years I have known that I was disabled but when I said this to my doctors they were somewhat non-committal.  They just did not know the in’s and out’s of the government’s specifications.

Then I met a Disability Tax Refund Specialist, Linda Chornobay, who knew a lot more than I did and a lot more than my doctors did.   I don’t think doctors have to know everything.  She presented a seminar at the Ridge almost a year ago. (April, 2009)   I couldn’t get to the meeting so I called her and she came to my home.  At our meeting she told me we could go back 10 years!  I provided the Assessment Notices from CRA for the past 10 years and received a refund of all the tax I had paid for the past 10 years!  Nowhere is that stated in CRA’s bulletin.  CRA doesn’t make it easy for Canadians to claim disability but in my case they even paid me interest on the refund!!!

We may know of many others who are disabled and don’t know that they are eligible for the DTC.   Let’s watch out for them.
